Katri Oikarinen

Katri ga ut debutalbumet i oktober 2021.

Old books that have lost their original function offer a multidimensional material enriched with meaning. Highlighting the origins of this material is essential for me. There is something very soothing in giving a new meaning to an artifact that has been discarded. Highly interesting new stories arise when one sees a book from a new angle, as an artifact and material that has its own history. Forms and meanings that once were hidden but begin to become intertwined awaken the inner child in me. This child finds deep joy in the resurfacing of new insights.

When I am working, I am usually creating multiple pieces at the same time. My instruments vary from guillotine to angle grinder and from utility knife to tweezers. Every now and then I pick up my guitar, ground myself and recapitulate all that has been created.

The pieces that are exhibited include collages made from books. In these pieces the illusionary piles and columns of books composed in frames tempt the viewer to take a peek on the other side of the wall. The faces carved from books dream the dreams of the previous generations, weaving new webs of meaning. Solitary books with modest appearances are hiding a whole new world inside of them.
